Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Food Packaging
What types of custom food packaging do you manufacture?
Vigor Packaging manufactures custom food packaging for chocolates, confectionery, panettone, madeleines, canelés, financiers, pound cakes and premium food gift sets.
Available structures include folding cartons, rigid gift boxes, window boxes, drawer boxes, paper trays, dividers and multi-product sets. The dimensions, structure, materials, printing and finishes can be customized according to the food product and sales channel.
Can you manufacture packaging for direct food contact?
Food-grade paper, liners, coatings and trays can be specified according to the product and whether the component will have direct or indirect food contact. You should inform us at the beginning of the project if food will touch the box, tray, liner or printed surface.
Direct-contact requirements vary by material, food type and destination market. The required declarations, testing standards and supporting documents should therefore be confirmed before quotation and material approval.
Does a paper food box extend the shelf life of the product?
A paper box alone does not normally provide a complete oxygen, moisture or aroma barrier. Product shelf life primarily depends on the food formulation, primary wrapping, sealing method, storage temperature and required barrier performance.
The outer box can provide physical protection, light screening, branding and secondary containment. If extended shelf life is required, the product may need a sealed inner bag, film, tray or other tested primary food-contact system.
Can food packaging resist grease, moisture and oil?
Grease-resistant paper, suitable coatings, liners and inner trays may be used depending on the food product. Cakes, chocolates and pastries have different levels of oil, moisture and temperature exposure, so the material should be selected according to actual use conditions.
Testing with the final food product is recommended because performance may be affected by storage time, temperature, fat content and direct-contact duration.
Can the packaging include windows, trays and dividers?
Yes. Food packaging can include transparent windows, paper trays, dividers, grease-resistant liners and other inserts to improve visibility, separation and protection.
Windows are useful when customers need to see the product before purchase, while trays and dividers can prevent delicate foods from touching each other. All food-contact components should be selected according to their intended use and target-market requirements.
What packaging is suitable for chocolates and confectionery?
A custom chocolate gift box can use cavities, trays or dividers to organize individual chocolates and reduce movement. Folding cartons work well for everyday retail ranges, while rigid boxes and drawer boxes are suitable for premium collections and seasonal gifting.
Chocolate packaging should also be designed around temperature sensitivity, fat migration, product size and any required inner wrapping. The outer box itself is not a substitute for temperature-controlled storage or shipping.
Which box structures are suitable for cakes and pastries?
The structure depends on the product size, weight, height, fragility and presentation. Tall products such as panettone require sufficient vertical strength and base support, making a fitted custom panettone box an appropriate option.
Smaller pastries may use individual cavities or dividers. For example, custom canelé boxes can be designed to separate products and reduce surface damage during handling.
Do you offer sustainable food packaging options?
Available options may include recyclable paperboard, kraft paper, recycled-content paper, FSC-certified paper when requested and available, molded pulp inserts and structures designed to reduce unnecessary material.
However, recycled material is not automatically suitable for direct food contact, and barrier coatings can affect recyclability. Material safety, product protection and local recycling infrastructure should all be considered before making environmental claims.
Can logos and decorative finishes be printed on food packaging?
Yes. Options may include CMYK or Pantone printing, foil stamping, embossing, debossing, spot UV and matte or gloss finishes. Our custom packaging finishes guide explains the appearance, protection and cost differences between common techniques.
Printing and decorative coatings are generally positioned on exterior or non-food-contact surfaces unless the selected ink, coating and application have been approved for the intended food-contact use. Required ingredient information, warnings, dates, batch areas and barcodes must be supplied and approved by the food brand.
What are the MOQ, sample time and production lead time?
Our standard MOQ is generally 1,000 pieces per design. The exact quantity depends on the dimensions, structure, food-contact materials, trays, printing and finishing requirements. Custom samples normally take 3–7 working days, while mass production generally takes 15–30 working days after sample and artwork approval.
For an accurate quotation, provide the food type, product dimensions and weight, direct-contact requirements, packaging structure, quantity, materials, printing, finishes, inserts and delivery destination. Seasonal food packaging should be ordered earlier to allow time for production and shipping. You can contact our packaging team for recommendations.
